Mentee Question
What soft skills are required for this field?(SOFT SKILLS: linkedin/git hub etc)
Mentors Answer
Answered By Mentor Pranav Bhat
Hey Adithyan,
Firstly I assume by "this field" you mean the field of technology.
I loved three aspects in your question, the forethought, the lack of fluff and the lack of cliché in your question :). While many others do focus on asking questions mostly around tech, you realised that with growing tools, your soft skills make you more invaluable to the team since technology can't replace soft and emotional aspects for a foreseeable future.
☝️So that makes asking the right questions with proper forethought, lack of fluff and hesitation and with the intent of knowing answers the most important "soft skill". Interesting that you already knew and had the answer hidden in the question isn't it 🙀
Now that we are speaking about "speaking"/"asking", another thing to consider along with the intent of communication is also how the communication is delivered. A good rule of thumb which I follow is that I try to rephrase my message to end it with a positive connotation. For example, if the a person is using method B and you believe method A was right, you can deliver this message as follows
- "You are using method B but the correct version is method A"
- "I appreciate you using method B for this but I believe method A would be perhaps an option to consider"
- "If I were in your place I would use method A, but I see your point on using method B"
If you notice the third approach would make the person feel more valued and positive, and that would help them become better supporters of you, which would help you make them productive, help them grow and grow in this process since you are developing the firm you are a part of.
